2016 SPRING/SUMMER OKASBO NEWS

Presidentially Speaking

Ms. Nancy Hughes, President, OKASBO Executive Dir. Financial Accounting, OCAS, Audits, OK State Department of Education

I can’t believe it is almost the end of the fiscal year. This has been a transition year for OKASBO but many things have been accomplished. One of the goals that the board set for the organization was to provide members with energetic and informative meetings on timely topics so they can discuss and study all phases of school business management. I believe the organization has accomplished that goal with the fall and spring conferences and the financial assistance program financial sessions from basic school finance, managing school activity funds, federal programs, to child nutrition. Another goal of the organization was to promote membership and promote participation in ASBO International. I am happy to say that our membership has increased and the attendance at ASBO International was tremendous. Something new this year was the eNewsBlast that you received this year. You can also find OKASBO on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. We also have the okasbo.org website with information on workshops to the power point presentations from our presenters. As you can see OKASBO wants to be in constant communication with its membership. With the end of the fiscal year, so does my year as serving as your president comes to an end. It has been a pleasure serving as your president this year. Getting the opportunity to work with so many school business officials has been a wonderful experience. To my fellow board members, it has been an honor to serve with you this year. Stacey, as past president, I want to thank you for all of your help this year. I encourage all of you to get involved with OKASBO and ASBO International; you will benefit personally and professionally and your school will also benefit from the experience you will gain from this organization. I hope you have a great summer, and I will see you at the fall conference. Nancy Hughes

OKASBO Spring Conference Highlights The OKASBO 2016 Spring Conference was filled with lots of learning and networking opportunities. Check out some of the following highlights from the conference.

“Leadership Redefined!” - Dave Weber Our conference featured the motivational speaking of Dave Weber. His words of redefining our definition of leadership and how we can positively influence our teams. Dave outlined 12 key principles that he believes will help any leader grow their organization in positive ways. Dave started out by demonstrating how we need to clearly communicate our expectations to others around us. He used a few of our audience members to help him make his point. We appreciate our OKASBO member for being such good sports and participating in Dave’s little demonstration.

Superintendent Joy Hofmiester It was great to have Supt. Joy Hofmiester share with us her thoughts on the recent budget crisis and how she and her team at the State Department of Education have been working diligently to educate legislators on their legislative direction and it’s impact on schools. We loved her candor and honesty when sharing her hopes for the future of Oklahoma education.

2016 SPRING/SUMMER OKASBO NEWS

Strength in Education Scholarship Recipient Presently, I am enrolled at Chattanooga High School; my experiences here have been adventurous and valuable. It has been both a stepping stone and a comer stone to prepare me for any and all of my future endeavors. High school has taught me that hard work, participation, and volunteerism do pay off. I have participated in every extracurricular activity that my school has offered and some that were not. I have strived to be a leader in most of those activities and a valuable team member when needed. I have had multiple summer jobs as well as a part -time job during school. I feel as if high school has prepared me not only for the stress of the adult world but also the leadership opportunities that college and life will present. Through my many experiences I have learned to not sit back but to standup and be a leader. Don't just complain about a problem; help fix it. I have had the great pleasure of serving my fellow students as an elected officer on our Student Council for the last two years. Additionally, I am co-captain of the basketball and captain of the track team. ln the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to be a page for the Oklahoma House of Representatives. That experience helped open my eyes to some of the issues our great state and nation are facing. It also allowed me to gain valuable leadership skills in both small and large group settings. Currently, I will attend Cameron University because of the location and the scholarship opportunities it bas to offer; additionally, it is a family tradition both of my parents and an older sister began their careers at CU. I will earn a Bachelor's in education/School Administration. The location is ideal as it is close to home and family. I feel I could have the college experience while accepting responsibility for my future and without abandoning my family obligations. Education has been a part of my entire life; my dad was an A g. teacher for many years and is now my high school principal. My mother has also been in the school system just as long as my father, as both a teacher's aide and the high school secretary. I would pursue a degree in education to become a math teacher and/or coach, both of which I would enjoy. I would then continue my education with a Master's to become a principal and then superintendent. I have always enjoyed volunteering and have had a fondness for math. I enjoy teaching others how to do something and explaining it step by step. As an athlete, I have realized how great of an impact a coach can have on a player both on and off the court. The lessons that my coaches taught me will last a lifetime, and I would like to impact others as my coaches have impacted me. I would enjoy education because I would have the opportunity to make a positive difference for many years. This scholarship will help me peruse my education so that I can eventually help others achieve what they hope to achieve. A program that has made an impact on my life is athletics. Athletics has not only shown me how to be a leader but also how to conduct myself in high pressure or tense situations. An issue that I have witnessed first-hand is students only coming to school for athletics and not the "school" part. I have seen many student athletes be very successful on the field or on the court; however, they that drive to succeed did not translate in the classroom. They made no effort to maintain their grades and were withheld from playing. Consequently, they paid more attention to their grades and were able to play again. In some schools students-athletes are given special advantages that others do not receive. Some teachers are pressured by coaches and administration to pass the student-athletes even if they do not deserve the right to play. Teachers do not deserve to feel this pressure. A solution to this massive problem would be to simply require the student-athletes who have below a 75 in a class miss their last hour practice, in order to go to a tutor until they have raised their grades to the 75mark. This would make them pay more attention to what really is important in school: your school work. High School has been one of many stepping stones of my journey and pursuit of a better life. One of the best lessons 1 have learned during my time at Chattanooga is that one person can do a lot if he or she stays determined, has a plan, and leads rather than follows. I am thankful for the people who have demonstrated this and for the positive impact that they have had on me. Now, though, it is time for me to do the same so that I may better their lives and my own; in doing so, I hope to one day better the world. — Jadel Higdon, 2016 Excellence in Education Scholarship Recipient Sponsored by Security Benefit

Directly Speaking... What an amazing year it has been for the OKASBO network. This year our schools Dawn Pearce have weathered the storm of the one of the biggest economic downturns in the history Ms. Executive Director, of education in Oklahoma. I’m proud that even during this time, our members OKASBO continued to be creative and seek ways to continue to connect and attend many of the events offered by our organization. This level of commitment shows the great connection our group has with each other and how much that investment in our profession and personal networks means to our group. Next year will bring with it many more of the same challenges that we saw this year with the addition of many more hard choices. It’s my charge to remind our network that we are only as good as our members that join. When you begin to make the decisions of where to invest your school dollars to support your profession, career, and district, we hope you will continue to invest in Oklahoma ASBO. Membership letters will be coming to your district in late June and membership renewals will be sent in July. We look forward to connecting with you again this upcoming year as we look at ways to support your work and your profession. Dawn Pearce
